Cortex reaches every specialty at Christchurch Hospital

Maternity went live in December, and with that, every specialty at Christchurch Hospital now runs on Cortex.

Waipapa, Christchurch Hospital's acute services building.

It caps a rollout that began with three General Surgery wards in 2017 and accelerated hard through COVID-19, when a planned three-year nursing rollout was condensed into six weeks. The campus now produces more than 45,000 clinical notes a week in Cortex, with over 5,000 clinicians active every month and 2.6 million patient record views a month.

The last departments to migrate were also some of the most complex. Maternity documentation follows two patients at once, mother and baby, and the workflows were designed by the midwives and obstetricians who use them, built in Cortex Designer the same way every other department built theirs.

Nobody at Christchurch Hospital writes a ward round note on paper anymore. That took ten years, one department at a time, and we’d do it the same way again.
